Mouse

Rats and mice are some of the most prevalent pests in homes and businesses due to their ability to adapt to the human environment. While neither mice or rats are welcome guests in our home, it is still imperative to know the difference between the two rodents so that you are able to properly identify which rodent has infested your home and plan your pest control efforts accordingly.

The easiest way to distinguish between the two rodents is by their size.  In general, mice are considerably smaller than rats. An average mouse is anywhere from two to four inches in length, as opposed to the much larger rat which measures seven to nine inches in length. A mouse’s ears are also much larger in proportion to the rest of their head as opposed to a rat who has much smaller ears.

Aside from their size, mice and rats also have very different patterns of behavior. Even though they are smaller in size, mice tend to be a bit bolder than rats. Mice are usually curious and will explore new things, including traps. Rats are far more difficult to trap as they typically live in fear and are very cautious about new things, which sometimes can make it difficult to trap them.

Mice and rats can both do a lot of damage to your home and belongings, but since rats are bigger, they tend to do more damage in a shorter period of time. Rats have been known to gnaw through various building materials, including aluminum, wood, glass, sheet metal and even cinder blocks.
