While locals in Northeast Florida may be rejoicing that this year’s unseasonably cold winter has come to an end, we must celebrate with caution as along with the warmer weather comes many pests to include fleas. Now is the time to start taking preventative measures against fleas in order to protect our furry friends.
Treat your pets
The best way to deal with a flea infestation is to treat them at the source—most flea infestations originate with your pets. Meet with your veterinarian and ensure that you have your furry friend on a treatment regimen that works best for your pet, this could involve supplements or a special treated collar. Be sure to bath your pet, and run a fine-toothed comb through their fur, rinse and repeat.
Clean your home
Start by vacuuming your entire house, whether or not you have carpets. Be sure to empty your vacuum outdoors so fleas cannot make their way back into your home! Wash all bedding, both yours and your pet’s and be sure to vacuum all furniture, especially your couch.
Treat your yard
Neglecting to address a large flea population in your yard can negate all the hard work you have done inside your house and with your pet. Be sure to remove all dead plants where fleas can live, use a flea spray on your patio and conduct regular flea sprays after large amounts of rain.
By following these steps for getting rid of fleas, and continuing using preventative measures, you will hopefully keep them out of your home and off your pets. However, this can be incredibly time-consuming and not always 100 percent effective.
