We all love to celebrate summer in Florida by cooking out with our family and friends while enjoying the warm weather. What we don’t love is the unwelcome presence of bugs at our beloved barbecues. Mosquitoes, wasps, ants, flies and bees have the ability to put a damper on your summer fun. Read our blog to find out how to keep these unwanted visitors away from your next backyard gathering!
Remove All Standing Water
Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other pests. If you have low areas in your yard, re-sod or add some dirt. Make sure that your gutters are clean and that your yard is free of puddles.
Light Candles or Lanterns.
Help keep bugs away from your patio and porch by lighting candles or lanterns that contain essential oils known to repel mosquitoes such as citronella, eucalyptus or peppermint.
Clean Up
Sanitation is critical for preventing the presence of flies. Use tight-fitting lids for garbage cans and be sure to clean up and empty the trash right after the party. Keeping things clean around your home and yard will help keep flies away.
Use Repellents
Put out a cup of sweet, non-carbonated liquid like juice of Gatorade a safe distance from your backyard BBQ before you start cooking to distract the insects from the BBQ. Try placing some cloves on your table to get rid of bees and wasps as both bees and wasps.
Spray Your Yard Ahead of Time
Before your gathering, it’s always a good idea to spray for bugs ahead of time with an effective yard bug spray or mosquito and tick killer.
Keep Food and Drinks Covered
Be sure to keep food covered with lids, plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Ensure that you put both the food and trash far away from where people are eating, as the scents from both attract bugs.
